Family Therapy

So many things are changing… and our families are paying a price.

The Digital Revolution

Everyone… young, old, and everywhere in between… has been pulled into the use of technology, and its impact and interference in our lives is undeniable.

Having trouble getting along?

Family therapy can help you improve or enhance your family relationships. You may want to address specific issues such as marital or financial problems, lack of communication due to too much screen time, conflict between siblings, trying to work from home while home schooling your children.

All these mentioned can complicate our relationships and can impact the entire family. Families become consumed by the digital age. Sometimes, especially now, it is the suggested method to communicate. This creates more distance, confusion, and conflict.

We expect one thing and receive something totally different from our spouse, children, and other family members. Our disappointment comes out with an effort to fix the problem, and unfortunately it is not well received. This can become even more challenging when a family member has a mental illness or an addiction.

Our providers are here at Modern Me Psychology, Inc. to help families address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family system. Whether the issues are related to major life transitions or mental health conditions, we are committed to helping you reach your goal.

How therapy helps…

Family therapy helps you and your loved ones learn how to better understand one another and collaborate to solve problems that are impacting the system.

For example, if your child is having problems at school, family patterns become the point of concentration to better understand what is contributing to your child’s difficulties. This does not mean your child’s behavior goes without being evaluated; it means that rather than focusing on your child alone, we work to address issues that may be triggering some of their issues. This will help your child feel more supported and understood.

As our providers work with the family to uncover the root cause of the issue, the family learns how to better support one another. The child may alter their response to the problem or completely cease to have the issue, thus minimizing or eliminating the conditions that were prompting the unwanted behavior or outcome.

Many of these negative changes in families are imperceptible.

It’s a lot like your hair going gray. It doesn’t all go gray at once. No, it happens one strand at a time; before you know it, you’re no longer sporting the dark hair of your youth.

Family therapy provides the space to help you and your family deal with worries of life.

It is normal for family to experience problems, and issues can present in some of the healthiest of families. We all experience challenges and frustrating interactions, whether it be with our spouse, children, or extended family member living in our home. Sometimes these interactions are painful, and we feel burdened with guilt, resentment, or anger.

Learning how to better communicate, collaborate, and compromise helps us co-exist with more harmony. Our providers will help you address common concerns and draw upon your strengths while recognizing opportunities to leverage support when needed. We will help you let go of “shoulds” and develop a healthier understanding of those you live with and love.

Our anger is a mask trying to conceal our fear, anxiety, grief, sadness, frustration, anger, resentment, guilt, worry, among other emotions. The providers at Modern Me Psychology will work with you and your family, whatever the distressing source. Please know we will handle it together, addressing difficult problems and emotions, and come up with solutions that feel comfortable for everyone involved including extended family.

If we’re not careful, we lose touch and no longer recognize the people closest and most important to us.

Without serious work, the family can become estranged.

Our goal is to help the family communicate, collaborate, and compromise!

Treatment is often brief. Most often communication styles are addressed, as most of the time how we communicate, both verbal and nonverbal, disrupt the cohesiveness of the family system.

Your family problems do not have to be so severe to enhance the communication, collaboration, and ultimately, a secure attachment. Working with our providers can help you and your loved ones better understand each other, communicate more effectively, and work together as a team to disrupt the unhealthy patterns that impact the cohesion of your family life.

A time to focus totally on you and your family…

In early sessions, you explain what you as a family want to work on and establish your goals, both immediate and long-term.

Sessions generally start with a check-in and lead into deeper work that’s often a continuation from prior meetings. It’s not uncommon for skills from sessions to be assigned as practice or “homework” for use when the need arises between meetings.

Appointments last just under an hour and are focused on your family and addressing your concerns as a family. Most families come to sessions once or twice a week, and therapy continues for as long as is necessary and beneficial. Some concerns are resolved in a matter of a few sessions; other, more complex situations require extensive treatment.

Family therapy should be challenging…

It often causes discomfort when you explore the experiences that brought you to therapy.

No one said growth and transformation were easy. It’s just like anything else you’ve ever applied effort to; it takes a bit of time, practice, and patience.

Hearing truth from family members can sometimes be painful and hard to swallow. You may even find yourself feeling angry, betrayed, and questioning whether it’s even worth your time.

The truth is family therapy is worth your time, and your family deserves your time and effort.

You will be supported along the way. So, no matter how awkward or uncomfortable, you have our providers to help you through this difficult process.

Before you know it, you notice change. What felt difficult in the beginning now feels more comfortable, and you begin to feel more confident as a spouse and parent.
