Autism

What Is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental difference that can affect communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, behavior, and the way a person experiences and responds to the world.

Autism is a spectrum, which means that people can have very different strengths, experiences, and support needs. Some individuals may experience challenges with social communication or sensory processing, while others may find that routines, changes, or certain environments are particularly difficult to navigate.

Therapy can focus on supporting an individual’s well-being and goals rather than trying to change who they are.

How Can Therapy Help?

Therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand personal experiences, develop coping strategies, and navigate situations that may feel challenging.

Depending on your needs, therapy may help you:

  • Develop strategies for managing stress and anxiety
  • Better understand and communicate emotions and needs
  • Navigate social and interpersonal situations
  • Develop coping skills for overwhelming experiences
  • Manage transitions and changes in routine
  • Address self-esteem and confidence concerns
  • Strengthen communication and relationship skills
  • Identify and build upon personal strengths

Treatment is individualized to the person’s developmental level, needs, strengths, preferences, and goals.

Who Can Benefit From Therapy?

Therapy may be helpful for autistic children, adolescents, and adults who want support with emotional, social, behavioral, or relationship concerns.

It may be helpful for individuals experiencing:

  • Anxiety or emotional distress
  • Difficulty navigating social situations
  • Challenges with communication
  • Difficulty managing changes or transitions
  • Sensory-related stress or overwhelm
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Self-esteem or confidence concerns
  • Challenges related to school, work, or daily functioning
