Helping Children and Teens Navigate Life’s Challenges

Growing up brings new experiences, changing relationships, and challenges that can sometimes feel difficult to manage. Children and teenagers may experience anxiety, sadness, frustration, behavioral concerns, school-related stress, or difficulty adjusting to changes at home or with peers.

At Modern Me Psychology, we provide individualized therapy to support children, preteens, and teenagers as they navigate these experiences. Therapy offers a supportive space for young people to better understand their emotions, develop coping skills, and work through challenges with the guidance of a caring clinician.

We also recognize that parents and caregivers play an important role in a young person’s well-being. When appropriate, therapy can help families better understand a child’s needs and identify ways to support progress at home and in everyday life.

When Can Therapy Help?

Children and teenagers may not always have the words to explain what they are feeling or why they are struggling. Sometimes, emotional distress appears through changes in behavior, difficulties at school, withdrawal from others, or increased conflict at home.

Therapy may be helpful when a child or teenager is experiencing:

    • Anxiety, excessive worry, or persistent fears
    • Sadness, low mood, or changes in emotional well-being
    • ADHD-related or learning-related challenges
    • Behavioral difficulties or frequent conflicts
    • Challenges with friendships, social relationships, or communication
    • School-related stress, academic difficulties, or school refusal
    • Difficulty managing frustration or strong emotions
    • Family changes, grief, or other major life transitions
    • Challenges related to autism
    • Difficulty adjusting to expectations, responsibilities, or developmental changes

Every young person is different. Therapy begins with understanding the individual, their experiences, and the concerns bringing them or their family to seek support.

How Can Therapy Help?

Therapy can give children and teenagers opportunities to explore their experiences, learn about their emotions, and develop skills that support their well-being.

Depending on the young person’s age, concerns, and treatment goals, therapy may focus on:

    • Recognizing and expressing emotions
    • Developing healthy coping strategies
    • Managing anxiety, stress, and frustration
    • Building confidence and problem-solving skills
    • Understanding thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
    • Navigating friendships and other relationships
    • Addressing behavioral patterns and everyday challenges
    • Adjusting to family, school, or life changes
    • Strengthening communication between young people and their families

For younger children, therapy may incorporate age-appropriate activities and play when clinically appropriate.

With preteens and teenagers, sessions may include more direct conversation, collaborative goal-setting, and practicing strategies for managing real-life situations.

Treatment is individualized rather than based on age alone. The clinician will consider the young person’s developmental needs, concerns, strengths, and circumstances when determining how to approach therapy.

Therapy for Children (Ages 6–10)

Children between the ages of 6 and 10 are developing important emotional, social, and problem-solving skills. They may have difficulty describing complicated feelings or understanding why certain situations lead to distress or conflict.

Therapy can help children explore their experiences in developmentally appropriate ways, learn to identify emotions, and practice skills for responding to challenges.

Depending on the child’s needs, treatment may address anxiety, behavioral concerns, ADHD-related challenges, school difficulties, family changes, or other emotional concerns.

Our clinicians who provide therapy for children ages 6–10 are:

Parents and caregivers may be involved in treatment when appropriate to the child’s needs and goals. Therapy can also help caregivers better understand their child’s experiences and identify ways to reinforce helpful strategies outside of sessions.

Therapy for Preteens and Teenagers

Preteens and teenagers face a range of developmental, academic, social, and emotional changes. Increasing independence, peer relationships, family expectations, school demands, and questions about identity can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Therapy can provide a space for young people to talk openly, explore their concerns, and develop strategies for navigating these experiences.

Treatment may address concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationship difficulties, behavioral challenges, school-related concerns, and major life transitions.

Our practicing clinicians offer therapy for preteens and teenagers. The practice can help families identify a clinician whose experience and approach align with the young person’s needs.

The goal is to support young people in building self-understanding, developing practical coping skills, and working toward goals that matter to them.

How Parents and Caregivers Can Support the Process

Seeking therapy for a child or teenager can bring questions about what to expect and how best to help. Parents and caregivers are important partners in supporting a young person’s well-being.

Depending on the treatment plan, therapy may include opportunities to discuss concerns, identify family supports, and explore ways to encourage progress outside of sessions.

At the beginning of treatment, the clinician can discuss the role of parents or caregivers, expectations for participation, and how confidentiality will be handled in an age-appropriate manner.

You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. Sharing what you have noticed and what concerns you about your child can be a helpful starting point.
